Today is supposed to be SNOW DAY 2015 in Atlanta. So far, the white stuff has yet to materialize, but most schools are still closed just in case. That means a lot of kids are hanging out at home. I hope they are having as much fun as my friend's son is in his fort (above). The following quote was heard from within the fort at one point in the day: "This is the BEST day EVER!!"
All it took was some sheets, blankets, boxes, and a parent's tolerance for chaos. The perfect recipe for a great childhood.
As one who spends a lot of time studying play I could go on and on about the benefits of a child building a fort like this instead of sitting in front of the television. Things like understanding spatial relationships, cooperation, not letting failure be anything other than information ("OK, so we can't jump on the roof of the fort"), and so on. But, really, all you need to know about play and child development is summed up in the expression on this little builder's face. Wonder. Joy. Excitement. Success. Magic.
Yes. Those things can definitely make for the best day ever. He sure made my day.
