An Old Idea Becomes Radically New

Is Atlanta ready for a new old kind of playground? What if we did an experiment in which we tried out an adventure playground like they did at Governor's Island in New York? This is an incredible idea whose time came, went and is back again! Think about it.…

Art + Play + Engineering = A Dream Worthy of Installation

Janet Echelman       +     Alberto Adolfo, Fernandez Gonzalez and Carlos Benjamin      +       Hyunjeong Kim

The artist Janet Echelman spoke at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) several months ago and I have been obsessed with figuring out how to create a play space with her ever since. She uses what are essentially fishermen's nets to create stunning, moving,…

Chastain Park teens talk about how they like to play in this raw footage. The male voice offering advice from off-camera is former ABC News correspondent Al Dale, father of Summer Dale. The young ladies from L-R: Summer Dale, Ana Dodys, Reeves, Trivette.

Everyone complains about teenagers so much that we forget they are still kids.…

Don't Forget to Bring Some Junk to Play With!

Take a few minutes to watch a fun little film on play and called "Play". It is from our friends at Play Wales who are quite brilliant when it comes to all things play. (Click on the picture to get the video to play.)

There is a "concept" of play called "loose parts play," that basically means that kids…

Atlanta Will Be Extraordinary

These 21 swings line a Montreal street every year, and they make beautiful music when they move (click on the picture to see the video.) That's the kind of thing that can make a place special.

Atlanta needs to be special. Not, "Wow, you wouldn't believe all the stuff you can buy here" special, but "Wow, when you're in Atlanta you can just feel the care that goes into everything. It's like…

At Serenbe You Can Learn A Lot from Children If You Listen and Watch

If you talk to grownups who work in the field of play you will soon discover who they go to when they need real information ...kids. Turns out they know a lot about play (even though many don't get to play too much any more). Recently I had the opportunity to spend a few hours with some very creative and very…

We're Going to the A.T.L.!

I hear it was an amazing weekend in downtown Atlanta. The streets were closed off for bicycles, and play, and poetry, and families, and fun. How many major cities have a playground right in the heart of downtown? Atlanta does! And, it looks like the saying, "If you build it they will…

Happy Mothers' Day

Happy Mothers' Day to all the Moms out there who take their children to the playground after school or after work, even when they'd give anything to just go home and relax for a while.

Big City + Play + Nature = HiPlay

I am obsessed with what I am calling "HiPlay" (for lack of a better name). HiPlay could be the answer to overgrown cities with no place to play. The idea comes from the new "agro-housing" or "sustainable housing" trend in the world of architecture. This picture is the winning design in…

Cardboard Boxes Unlock Imaginations

Who would ever guess that cardboard boxes could transform a playground into a downhill slalom, a giant cupcake, and a technicolor miss-mash-mansion. We did; or at least, we hoped they would.…

But, It's Just a Cardboard Box!

This Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 10:00am until noon children from around the Chastain Park area are going to be faced with a stack of folded up corrugated boxes, tape, and paints, and will be told to "Go for it!"  I wonder what they will do on this Fort-building…

KID CAM AT PLAY

Remember?

This is a wonderful video shot in a New York CIty playground by a five-year-old in the act of playing. Apparently Mom strapped an iPod Touch to her and let her go. It's wonderful, in spite of the little bump in the road along the way. Enjoy!

(Thanks to Tim Gill for finding…

The Itch is Back

Can you imagine being a 6-year-old girl and climbing into this nest with your best friends? I can see covering the floor of the nest with some kind of soft grasses or even blankets... I'd love for them to be able to bring big pillows and have a spend-the-night party in there. It's brilliant.  It's…
