Art + Play + Engineering = A Dream Worthy of Installation

Janet Echelman       +     Alberto Adolfo, Fernandez Gonzalez and Carlos Benjamin      +       Hyunjeong Kim

The artist Janet Echelman spoke at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) several months ago and I have been obsessed with figuring out how to create a play space with her ever since. She uses what are essentially fishermen's nets to create stunning, moving,…

A Dream Realized

The Summer Dale Treehouse at Play Chastain (Atlanta, Georgia)

Six Years Later It Still Rings True

Six years ago today I posted these pictures and thoughts about play being akin to a universal language. I have learned so much about play since I wrote this, but the words seem truer to me now than they did then. Play is fundamental. It is a basic right of children, because it is a universal truth, a common language, a requirement for a healthy and happy childhood. Back when I wrote this I didn't realize how ever present…

A Decades-Old Memory of Playing in Baltimore

This is not an ordinary slide you see before you. This is the slide that three-year-old me slid down on the way to buy shoes. It was magic. The anticipation of arriving at the store that you entered via a slide is so vivid and alive that it is as if it happened yesterday, instead of (gulp) 59…

I'm Flying...FLYING!!

So THAT is what it feels like to fly! To be Peter Pan or Tinker Bell, or a Red-Tailed Hawk or a ring-tailed lemur...

Still think play is trivial? Something relegated to "down time"? Do you think there has to be a reason to play - an outcome? What if we just let kids play? Play, just for play's sake, is more than good…

Creativity and Play - Simply Inseparable

My grandson, the artist, at work

My four-year-old grandson loves to draw the wind with pink and green crayons. When I first noticed this I asked him to tell me what those squiggly little lines on his paper were. He stopped drawing and looked closely into…

Atlanta Will Be Extraordinary

These 21 swings line a Montreal street every year, and they make beautiful music when they move (click on the picture to see the video.) That's the kind of thing that can make a place special.

Atlanta needs to be special. Not, "Wow, you wouldn't believe all the stuff you can buy here" special, but "Wow, when you're in Atlanta you can just feel the care that goes into everything. It's like…

What Does YOUR Play Map Look Like?

I grew up in the 60s in an Atlanta neighborhood called Hanover West. It was very much a classic "Leave It To Beaver" type place. Moms stayed at home. Dads went to work. Kids went to school or played outside. You knew everybody's dog and parents' car. You knew the best trees to climb, the best…

Something To Consider

Making Work More Like Play

This is a picture of the world headquarters of the Atlanta Taskforce on Play (ATOP), and that big red rubber ball? My new desk chair! The idea came from my doctor who said it would help me build up my core muscles during all of those hours spent at work, but I've got to say, it's doing great things for my head, too! I'm so glad the only color they had was red. It just wouldn't be the same if it was gray. Color and design, really do make a…
